Asian Handicap: Complete Guide with Examples and Quarter Lines

Asian Handicap: Complete Guide with Examples and Quarter Lines

15.08.2026 23:54

Asian handicap is a betting market in which one team is given a virtual advantage while the other receives a virtual disadvantage. One of its main purposes is to remove or reduce the importance of the draw as a separate betting outcome.

The most important part of understanding Asian handicap betting is knowing what lines such as 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75 actually mean.

The lines that usually cause the most confusion are the quarter lines – .25 and .75, because a bet placed on one of these lines is effectively divided into two equal bets.

What Does Asian Handicap 0 Mean?

Asian Handicap 0 is also commonly known as Draw No Bet.

Example

Arsenal 0 vs Chelsea

Result Bet Outcome
Arsenal 2:1 Chelsea Win
Arsenal 1:1 Chelsea Refund
Arsenal 0:1 Chelsea Loss

What Does +0.5 Asian Handicap Mean?

With a +0.5 handicap, half a goal is added to the selected team's score for betting settlement purposes.

The bet wins if your team either wins the match or draws. It loses only if your selected team loses.

Actual Result Bet Outcome
Liverpool 2:1 Man City Win
Liverpool 1:1 Man City Win
Liverpool 0:1 Man City Loss

What Does -0.5 Asian Handicap Mean?

With -0.5, your selected team must win the match for the bet to be successful.

Result Bet Outcome
Selected team wins Win
Draw Loss
Selected team loses Loss

There is no refund possibility with a -0.5 handicap.

What Does +1 Asian Handicap Mean?

With +1, the selected team receives a virtual one-goal advantage.

Actual Result +1 Outcome
Milan wins Win
Draw Win
Milan loses by 1 Refund
Milan loses by 2+ Loss

What Does -1 Asian Handicap Mean?

With -1, one virtual goal is deducted from the selected team's result.

How Do Asian Handicap Quarter Lines Work?

This is the most important part to understand when learning Asian handicap betting.

When you see lines such as:

your stake is divided into two equal bets.

If you bet €100, it is effectively settled as two €50 bets.

Asian Handicap +0.25

+0.25 = 0 and +0.5

A €100 bet is divided into:

Match Result +0.25 Outcome
Selected team wins Full win
Draw Half win
Selected team loses Full loss

+0.25 Example

Imagine you bet €100 on Manchester United +0.25 at odds of 2.00.

The match ends:

Manchester United 1:1 Tottenham

Your bet is divided into two parts.

€50 on Handicap 0

The match is a draw, so this €50 stake is refunded.

€50 on Handicap +0.5

The +0.5 portion wins.

€50 × 2.00 = €100 return

Total amount returned:

€50 + €100 = €150

Your original stake was €100, so your net profit is €50.

This is known as a half win.

Asian Handicap -0.25

-0.25 = 0 and -0.5

A €100 stake is divided into:

Match Result -0.25 Outcome
Selected team wins Full win
Draw Half loss
Selected team loses Full loss

-0.25 Example

You bet €100 on Inter -0.25.

The stake is divided into:

The match finishes:

Inter 1:1 Milan

The €50 placed on Handicap 0 is refunded.

The €50 placed on -0.5 loses.

You receive €50 back from your original €100 stake.

This is called a half loss.

Asian Handicap +0.75

+0.75 = +0.5 and +1

A €100 stake is divided into:

Match Result +0.75 Outcome
Selected team wins Full win
Draw Full win
Lose by exactly 1 goal Half loss
Lose by 2+ goals Full loss

+0.75 Example

You place €100 on Juventus +0.75.

The stake becomes:

Napoli beats Juventus 2:1.

Juventus has lost by exactly one goal.

The +0.5 half loses.

The +1 half is refunded.

The final result is a half loss.

Asian Handicap -0.75

-0.75 = -0.5 and -1

A €100 stake is divided into:

Match Result -0.75 Outcome
Win by 2+ goals Full win
Win by exactly 1 goal Half win
Draw Full loss
Lose Full loss

-0.75 Example

You bet €100 on Bayern -0.75.

The stake is split into:

Bayern wins 2:1.

The -0.5 half wins.

The -1 half is refunded.

The result is a half win.

If Bayern had won 3:1, both parts would have won and the result would have been a full win.

Asian Handicap +1.25

+1.25 = +1 and +1.5

If your team loses by exactly one goal, the +1 portion is refunded while the +1.5 portion wins.

The result is therefore a half win.

Asian Handicap -1.25

-1.25 = -1 and -1.5

If the selected team wins by exactly one goal, the -1 portion is refunded while the -1.5 portion loses.

The result is a half loss.

Asian Handicap +1.5

There is no stake splitting with +1.5.

Result +1.5 Outcome
Win Win
Draw Win
Lose by 1 goal Win
Lose by 2+ goals Loss

Asian Handicap -1.5

With -1.5, the selected team must win by at least two goals.

Result -1.5 Outcome
Win by 2+ goals Win
Win by 1 goal Loss
Draw Loss
Lose Loss

Asian Handicap +1.75

+1.75 = +1.5 and +2

If the selected team loses by exactly two goals, the +1.5 portion loses while the +2 portion is refunded.

This produces a half loss.

Asian Handicap -1.75

-1.75 = -1.5 and -2

If the selected team wins by exactly two goals, the -1.5 part wins while the -2 part is refunded.

This is a half win.

The Easiest Way to Understand Quarter Lines

You do not need to memorize every possible result. Instead, learn how each quarter line is split.

.25 Lines

A .25 line is split between the whole-number handicap and the next half-goal handicap.

.75 Lines

A .75 line is split between the half-goal handicap and the next whole-number handicap.

Asian Handicap Quarter-Line Summary

Handicap How It Is Split
+0.25 0 / +0.5
-0.25 0 / -0.5
+0.75 +0.5 / +1
-0.75 -0.5 / -1
+1.25 +1 / +1.5
-1.25 -1 / -1.5
+1.75 +1.5 / +2
-1.75 -1.5 / -2
+2.25 +2 / +2.5
-2.25 -2 / -2.5

How Is a Half Win Calculated?

Imagine a bet of €100 at odds of 1.90 on Team A -0.75.

Team A wins by exactly one goal.

The bet is split into:

The winning part returns:

€50 × 1.90 = €95

The refunded part returns:

€50

Total return:

€145

Since the original stake was €100, the net profit is:

€45

This is a half win.

How Is a Half Loss Calculated?

You place €100 on Team A +0.75.

Team A loses by exactly one goal.

The bet is divided into:

You receive €50 back from the original €100 stake.

Your net loss is therefore €50.

This is called a half loss.

What Should You Remember?

Whole-number lines: 0, 1, 2, 3

These can result in a full stake refund.

Half-goal lines: 0.5, 1.5, 2.5

There is no push or refund. The bet either wins or loses.

Quarter lines: 0.25, 0.75, 1.25, 1.75

Your stake is divided into two equal bets.

Because of this, five different settlement outcomes can occur:

  1. Full win
  2. Half win
  3. Refund
  4. Half loss
  5. Full loss

The Shortest Rule to Remember

.25 = whole number + half-goal line

.75 = half-goal line + next whole number

For example:

The same principle applies to negative handicap lines.

Important Note

Settlement rules can differ between bookmakers, especially in situations involving abandoned matches, extra time, neutral venues or special betting markets.

For a standard football Asian handicap market, settlement is normally based on the match period specified by the bookmaker, most commonly regular time.

Always check the rules of the specific bookmaker before placing a bet.

Asian handicap betting does not guarantee profit or remove the risk of losing. It simply changes how the match result is converted into a winning, refunded, partially winning or losing bet.
